If you find yourself needing to use a tractor when the weather gets cold, there are a few tips and tricks you can use to make the job easier and safer and to ensure your tractor stays in top condition.  We’ve put together this guide to help you get the best out of your tractor when the weather is giving you its worst. And when you’re ready to shop, come visit our dealership, where we have a wide selection of tractors and other equipment available at competitive prices.

Storage

Basic maintenance is key to keeping your machine running smoothly. Check your tractor’s engine oil, just like you do with a car. Remove the dipstick, clean it, reinsert, and then pull it out again to check the oil. It should be gold in color and thin in consistency. If the oil is sludgy or brown or too viscous, you’ll need to drain the oil and look into replacing the filter.

Winter Usage

During cold weather, there’s a lot of moisture in the air. If this moisture gets inside your tractor's engine, it can cause problems like startup failure. Be careful about checking for moisture buildup so you can fix it before it causes extensive damage requiring expensive repairs.

If you’re not going to be using the tractor for most of the winter, consider draining the gasoline, and then add back a gallon with some stabilizer to prevent your tank from rusting.  Finally, clean the tractor thoroughly, both inside and out, removing any potentially corrosive materials, dirt, grease, manure, and the like.  Add lubrication to your grease points, like the hydraulic cylinder rods. Store and cover your tractor and keep it protected from the rain and elements.  Be careful not to use a plastic cover as it can reduce air circulation and lead to mechanical damage as water condenses inside the cover.
