Lawn Prep

Start by taking two passes around the edge of your yard, paying extra attention to areas next to fences and buildings or any other structure that doesn’t let you completely pass the mowing deck over the grass.

Circle Pattern

This is an easy and time-efficient pattern to achieve. When you continue to make circular passes around the edge, you’ll find that each pass will be shorter until you reach the yard’s center. You won’t be required to make any sharp turns as in the case of some other patterns and you don’t have to be mindful of mowing in a straight line.

Stripes

Stripes are a regular feature of professionally maintained lawns, such as golf courses and baseball fields. It’s quick and easy to get this effect – turn 180 degrees, then mow in the opposite direction with a slight overlap of the first pass. If you continue this pattern in alternating directions until you finish up, the grass will be bent in two directions for light and dark patches. Stripes are the easiest to execute with a zero-turn mower since you’ll be able to turn with an effective radius of zero.

The Oval Pattern

This pattern is best achieved by using a lawn tractor. Take a pass down the center, then shift to the edges, taking a pass in the opposite direction. Next, return to the middle again and take another pass next to the first one in the opposite direction of the second pass. Continue this pattern until the entire yard is mowed. An oval pattern will be created, which can be repeated week after week by beginning the first pass perpendicular to the first pass the previous week.
